Beyond your specific sporting expectations, some technical criteria go into the process of choosing the best elliptical machine.
A solid and robust structure will give you pleasure and comfort of use over the long term. Thus, the more your device will be heavy and the more stable it will be. However, take the time to check the maximum weight allowed on the device by the user. Also, your elliptical machine should measure between 1 meter and 1m30 long to allow you to perform an ample and supple elliptical movement, for a more comfortable pedaling comfort over the distance. Thus, the bigger you are, the more you have to orientate your choice to a long model (greater than 1m30 in length for the larger ones).
Be sure to check your bike’s wheelbase and make sure it’s in your place.
A small gap between the pedals (also known as footboards) favors a more natural position for the body, so it is a criterion that can be taken into account when comparing different models of elliptical bikes.
Note that some models are equipped with level compensators (stabilizers) to correct the unevenness of the ground and offer you greater stability.
The amplitude of pedaling.
The longer your device, the greater the pedaling amplitude and the more comfortable your exercise will be.
The ellipse formed by the movement of your legs will be more or less elongated according to the chosen model.
Indeed, elliptical bikes with an inertia wheel located at the rear offers a more circular stride. The transfer of weight from one leg to the other will therefore be more important for less muscular effort and faster wheel rotation speed. This type of model is therefore recommended for weight loss.
On the contrary, an inertia wheel located at the front allows a flatter step. The muscles are thus more stressed and the speed of rotation is slower. These bike models are thus designed for muscle building.
The distance between the pedals.
For smooth training and natural hip movement and flexibility, choose the distance between the pedals as small as possible and therefore better adapted to the width of your pelvis.
The inertia wheel.
Buy elliptical standing bike The inertia wheel is truly the cornerstone of your elliptical machine. It guarantees the fluidity of your movements and your pedaling comfort. As explained earlier, the more it will be heavy, the better your comfort during exercise.
– For an occasional use of your elliptical machine, we advise you to opt for a bicycle with a wheel of inertia of at least 7kg.
– For a more regular or even daily use, a wheel of inertia of at least 20kg will be more adapted.
It will allow you to climb at your will in difficulty during your sessions and thus to better work your cardio-respiratory capacities.
You will also find an indication of the transmission ratio for some models. This indicates the number of turns your elliptical machine makes for one turn of the pedal (RPM). Thus, the lower this ratio will be and the better your pedaling comfort will be.
Note: the weight of the inertia wheel is to be dissociated from the mass of inertia. Indeed, the mass of inertia comprises the weight of the inertia wheel but also all the mechanism associated with this wheel (the mass is therefore greater than the weight). So make sure to take the same features when comparing several models.
The braking system.
There are mainly two braking systems: magnetic braking and electromagnetic braking. The choice of the system will influence the fluidity and comfort of pedaling.
Magnetic braking consists in braking the inertia wheel by means of several magnets which will approach. This action can be done manually, by wheel, or motorized, directly from the console for a more precise control. Ideal system for occasional, even regular use, it will fill the beginners of all ages.
In all three cases, note that there will be no need for maintenance since there is no friction between the elements of the chosen braking mechanism.
